The Dark Knight Rises – Loved it. I have been excited about this movie since the first silhouette of a bat through a broken Gotham skyline. This iteration of Baine was awesome (mostly) and should be a model for future villains: cold, ruthless, calculating, yet unfailingly polite. And I would be lying if I said my internal dialogue wasn’t sometimes spoken in his voice now. Thought Anne Hathaway did a great job as Catwoman – and I really liked the cat-ears. Also, Alfred is the best servant ever for keeping the car collection up to date. My only real complaint with the movie was that for it to be titled with “The Dark Knight” there was actually very little Dark Knight in the movie. And seriously — at one point everyone in the movie knew that Bruce Wayne was, in fact, Batman — why did he keep with the crazy Batman voice? “WHERE IS THE TRIGGER?! WHERE IS THE TRIGGER?! WHERE IS THE TRIGGER?!” We get it, you’re mad. We’re moving. We’re moving. And yes, Lucius Fox may very well be

Marvel’s The Avengers – Wow, this one was fun. Looking forward to it for how many years now? Where did Nick Fury first show up? Iron Man? Not sure. Either way, great movie. We saw it pretty close to opening night and the theater was packed – and you know how I love a full theater. Lots of cheering and carrying on throughout the movie. And I love that some of the best fights were between the teammates – Captain America vs Iron Man vs Thor, Thor vs the Hulk – loved those fights. And Robert Downey Jr. carried this movie from start to finish. Love the new Tony Stark, who replaced the whiny cry-baby clone from Iron Man 2. Let’s keep this one!

The Amazing Spiderman – I gotta tell you – I was skeptical on this one. I liked the Sam Raimi Spiderman movies. I liked the cast and the feel of the first three (if we don’t count the debacle that was emo Venom-Spiderman who makes me want to put a boot through the TV every time I see his stupid finger guns). So, I wasn’t sure about this new group. Glad I saw it, though – because I think I may like it more than Raimi’s version. The dark and gritty feel to it, I like. Sally Field and Martin Sheen as Aunt Meg and Uncle Ben? Awesome. Also, I like the more life-like version of the web Spiderman uses. I always felt like we should have called bullshit on spider webs shooting from some undetermined place in Spiderman’s wrist. Great movie here.

Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace – Hmm. This one is mixed. I love Star Wars above any other movie franchise. But this one? It feels so … useless. It does very little to advance the story, outside of saying, “Here. Meet Anakin, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, these droids, and Emperor Palpatine. They are important later.” I don’t hate the movie, as some do, but there are about 3 parts of the movie I actually enjoy. The rest is filler. I saw this one again at the theater for the release in 3D. Regardless of the new medium, it did nothing to improve the experience. Except for the Obi-Wan / Qui-Gon / Darth Maul fight. I could watch that fight over and over, so long as the soundtrack was at high volume.

Underworld Awakening – Kate Beckinsale in skin tight leather … again? Sounds like an excellent movie! No, I really don’t care what it’s about. She can sit in a chair reading the phone book for all I care, really, so long as she wears that getup. And maybe shoots a gun every so often. All of this is true, and I enjoyed the movie, but something was … missing. I’m not sure if they were trying too hard to cover the fact that Scott Speedman was not there, but that’s kind of what it felt like. Maybe Michael Corvin was supposed to be in the movie and something fell through? Either way, as much as I liked the movie, something felt somehow “off” about it. Except for the outfit.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance – Why did I see this movie? I don’t really care for Nicolas Cage. I was not crazy about the first movie. The previews looked terrible. But I saw it anyway – and you know what? It sucked. Cage is not the best actor – and the whole movie just felt … over the top … but in a very lazy way. Not a fan.

Taken 2- Liam Neeson kicking more Albanian ass. What more do you need in a synopsis? I was worried this was going to be too much of a reach, a copy of the first movie. It kind of was a reach, but a [moderately] plausible one with a pretty decent payoff. It’s kind of nice to see the revenge plotline served cold, without that “revenge is bad and makes you a lesser person” undertone we so often see. Because – sometimes revenge makes you feel good. Sometimes, people deserve what they get. And it’s fun to watch. Good movie here.

Battle: Los Angeles – For months I have been looking forward to the newest aliens-terrorize-Earth movie. While it was not quite what I expected, I thought it was pretty awesome. I was reminded of some of my favorite Stephen King books, in that sometimes the best story doesn’t have to come from the large scale event, but how a small group of individuals handle said event. The movie gives only a glancing blow at explanation for the aliens’ invasion, just a hint of the world-wide impact and response. What is important here is the reaction of a small group of people. We know what they know and nothing more, and only learn as they learn. And seriously, was there one scene in this movie without gunfire in the soundtrack? Loved it. And they really had the intense meter turned up on this one. I think I sat on the edge of my seat (chewing fingernails) for about an hour and a half. Definitely recommend.

Super 8– You know, this is one of those movies where the marketing left me a little unsure. I’ve been watching trailers for months and still had no idea what this movie was about. That can really go either way. Sometimes when the trailers don’t give you some idea of plot … it’s because there is no plot (or it completely sucks and they know it) – here’s looking at you,

X-Men: First Class – Another X-Men movie. I liked it. Was fun to see the earlier development of the characters already established in the earlier (later?) movies. As always, the effects and the fighting were top notch. Really liked the back and forth argument between Professor and Magneto (whose actual names escape me) — which one is right? I’m not sure.
